Electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes raised at the Port of Savannah
23 November 2022Crews have raised the first of five new Konecranes electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes (e-RTGs) at the Port of Savannah’s new cross-dock facility in the US.
Four more e-RTGs are due to arrive next week, making a total of nine.
As reported by Hoist Magazine when news of the Georgia Ports Authority order was made public, the nine cranes are supplied with cable reels for electric operation. They are 16-wheel RTGs with a lifting capacity of 40 tons, a stacking height of 1-over-6, and a stacking width of 6-plus-truck-lane wide. They will be equipped with Konecranes’ Active Load Control system, which prevents container sway.
Georgia Ports Authority said the new Port of Savannah facility will from next summer speed up the transition of cargo from containers to over-the-road trailers.
We reported back in February that when all of the new nine cranes are in service, the Georgia Ports Authority will have a fleet of 210 Konecranes RTGs in operation.
The order is intended to increase annual capacity at the Port of Savannah by 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) container units.
