Steel producer Voestalpine Stahl Donawitz has selected equipment supplier Danieli to provide five automated scrap yard cranes for its facility in Donawitz, Austria.

The new cranes will feature the Danieli Scrap Yard Management System (Q3-DYMS).

The order forms part of a broader initiative by Voestalpine aimed at supporting green steel production, following previous purchases of two electric arc furnaces (EAF) and two semi-automatic EAF charging cranes from Danieli.

The newly commissioned cranes will operate using advanced automation technologies such as absolute positioning systems, video monitoring tools, anti-sway and regenerative drives, as well as systems for classifying scrap materials and monitoring yard inventory volume.

Each crane can function with either electromagnets or electrohydraulic grabs to suit various types of scrap. These capabilities are intended to facilitate autonomous operation while optimising energy use.

Voestalpine’s investment in these automated solutions is positioned within its ongoing programme to advance sustainable steelmaking practices at the Donawitz location.

Danieli scrap yard cranes are designed to help achieve high operational efficiency and reliability, enabling frequent working cycles aligned with plant layouts and production requirements.

The systems allow for manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic modes and can be adapted to the specific properties of different scrap materials.

The company offers several configurations including EOT or gantry cranes equipped with a single hoist, EOT or gantry cranes outfitted with two hoists positioned parallel to the main girders.

It also has EOT or gantry cranes fitted with two hoists arranged orthogonal to the main girders.
