AXIMA Automation and Konecranes have completed the commissioning of an overhead crane equipped with an electromagnetic system for an unnamed client.

The equipment is designed for lifting and handling of metal sheets. It can lift and move metal sheets measuring 2,500mm by 14,000mm, with thicknesses ranging from 2mm to 40mm, and weighing up to 11,500kg.

AXIMA Automation CEO Libor Kafka said that the system uses six electromagnets, which operators can rotate to angles of 0, 45, or 90 degrees.

This adjustability is intended to address the specific challenge of safely handling thin metal sheets measuring just 2mm thick.

By setting the electromagnets at a 45-degree angle, the system enables secure lifting despite the sheets’ tendency to bend.

The project marks AXIMA Automation’s first collaboration with a new client that already applies electromagnetic systems in daily operations.

Despite existing solutions in use, the client chose AXIMA Automation to deliver a specialised electromagnetic system meeting established operational standards, said Kafka.

The company’s MACOdrive power supplies with battery backup for the electromagnets, as well as integration of magnet controllers to ensure consistent operation under demanding industrial conditions.

In a LinkedIn post, Kafka said: “This project highlights how engineering and smart design can improve efficiency and safety.

“This project is particularly meaningful to me — it is our first collaboration with a new customer who already uses electromagnetic systems in their operations. Despite having existing solutions, they placed their trust in AXIMA Automation to deliver an electromagnetic system that meets their high standards.

“I am fully aware of the responsibility this trust carries. There is no space for error, and every detail mattered. I sincerely hope that the final result meets — and exceeds — their expectations.”

AXIMA Automation designs and manufactures both standard and customised power supply systems for heavy lifting magnets, including those required for material handling in various sectors.
