New York State’s Scarano Boat Building Inc has invested in a 10 ton overhead bridge crane thanks to a $376,000 grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The 10 ton, Class D, single girder, overhead bridge crane will have a 63ft-span and a 400ft runway. A single trolley equipped with a 10 ton hoist will be supplemented by a 3 ton auxiliary hoist, and they will work in simultaneous operation.

The crane is being installed by North American Industries (NAI), who will also retrofit an existing 3 ton single girder overhead crane at Scarano’s facility. NAI will reposition the existing crane, and reduce its span from 58ft to 52ft.

NAI said some $98m has been allocated for the improvement of small shipyards and worker training in the maritime industries, with Scarano awarded the money through the Maritime Administration’s Small Shipyards Grant Program.
