Wilo Group has implemented Demag Cranes & Components’ KBK modular light crane system at its newly built smart factory in Dortmund, Germany.
The facility integrates digital mapping and control of processes, contributing to streamlined material flow and improved productivity.
The collaboration between Wilo and DART Fördertechnik played a crucial role in the development and execution of the advanced crane system.
DART Fördertechnik managing director Axel Ditz said: “The diversity of Demag KBK is unique, which is why we were able to find tailor-made, ergonomic and always industry-appropriate solutions for every workstation, including at test stations and with semi-automated handling.”
“With this, Wilo is much more flexible. The travel paths and working areas can be easily changed and, above all, expanded if necessary.”
“We have customised every crane at every workstation precisely to the transported goods and the respective work steps.”
Wilo, a prominent manufacturer of pumps and pump systems, has transformed its headquarters, known as Wilopark, to include advanced production capabilities.
The new facility features a sophisticated material handling system, including driverless transport technologies, underpinned by Demag’s crane solutions.
The setup allows for flexible, efficient production tailored to customer orders, enhancing economic output.
Wilo project manager Stephan Böing said: “The Demag KBK system offers many options, including support for operators when lifting and moving loads.
“We have used many of these options to be able to respond precisely to the requirements of our colleagues.”
The design of the facility prioritised employee ergonomics and safety, implementing customised lifting aids at workstations where loads exceed eight kilograms.
Wilo’s partnership with DART Fördertechnik, a certified Demag partner, allowed for the customisation of crane systems to meet specific operational demands.
The facility’s design ensures no traditional wall or ceiling suspensions for handling systems, replaced instead by gantry-mounted runways for suspension cranes.
The approach not only increases flexibility but also accommodates the skywalk feature above the production area.
The Demag KBK system facilitates precise handling of pump components, supported by advanced hoist and control technologies.
Böing added: “We have been working on practical solutions with DART for years, and we put a lot of thought into planning the new production facility together.
“Now you can say that we have achieved exactly what we imagined: a flexible workstation crane concept that can adapt to changing requirements.
“Since then, the Demag KBK system has proven itself at a wide variety of assembly, testing and packaging stations. And the colleagues are very satisfied.”
Earlier this year, Lift Safe Cranes India installed Demag KBK light crane systems at four locations in India, including Punjab, Kolkata, Jahirabad, and Pune.
