The new Recon X-series includes several optional models, all with more Flash memory than before. New features in the X-series include the option of integrated Bluetooth and 802.11g wireless, a built-in microphone, and a redesigned keypad. Handheld Europe said the transflective color touchscreen works perfectly even in direct sunlight. It added, like the original, the Recon X-Series meets the MIL-STD-810F military standard for drops, vibration and temperature extremes, from –30 degrees C to 60 degrees C.

With its IP67 rating, it is resistant to water and dust. The two protected CompactFlash slots supports accessories such as GPS, GPRS, RFID, barcode scanners and other devices. The detachable PowerBoot module integrates a 3800 mAh battery pack with industry standard 9-pin serial and USB ports into a single component, easily replaceable in field.

“With more wireless options, increased memory and with Windows Mobile 5.0, the new Recon X-series will be a sure success for us,” said Thomas Löfblad, director of Handheld Europe AB.

The company added: “The Recon’s Windows Mobile 5.0 software includes several new features that improve efficiency and reliability. Persistent storage saves all programmes and data to nonvolatile Flash memory. This eliminates the need for a RAM file system or system backups.”

Windows Mobile 5.0 also features Mobile versions of familiar Microsoft applications such as Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, Outlook Mobile, PowerPoint and Windows Media Player 10.

“Windows Mobile provides enterprises with a consistent and flexible platform to assist in the mobilisation of their workforce and increase productivity,” said Chris Hill, group product manager, mobile and embedded devices division, at Microsoft.

He added: “Windows Mobile 5.0, along with TDS’s rugged hardware provides access to important information at any time and anywhere in the most extreme conditions.”
