Cableform has launched a solid-state IGBT magnet controller for scrap-handling cranes. The controller reduces the amount of discharge voltage to less than 350V, compared to 700V with varistor suppression and 1600V with traditional resistor suppression, according to the company.
The controller has five operating modes with existing two- or three-position operator controls. It can lift, applying 100% voltage in less than 50ms, hold, reducing current to an optimised level, dribble, slowly reducing current; drop, where it discharges through the IGBT discharge circuit without voltage spikes; and clean, reversing the current without voltage spikes.
Two models are available: the M200 for applications up to 200 amps, and the M350, up to 350 amps.
RS485 communications are available for remote monitoring or automation.
Cableform installed the first Optimizer Solid State Magnet Controller on a steel mill scrap handing crane application in February 2004.
