Chesterfield Crane Company recently completed the manufacture and installation of two 5t, 12-metre span single girder overhead cranes at Cheadle Glass’s Stockport facility. Designed and built in-house and fitted with proven equipment from GH Cranes & Components, these cranes are set to support day-to-day operations while providing the flexibility needed for future growth.

The removal of the existing crane was particularly tight, with only millimetres to spare on either side of the doorway.

Cheadle Glass placed their trust in the Chesterfield team allowing them to deliver a smooth, safe and well-coordinated project from start to finish. Cheadle Glass is a leading manufacturer of processed glass in the North West, with over 50 years of experience in the industry, says Graham Cullen, factory manager at Cheadle Glass. Recently acquired by BSW Group, the business has benefitted from significant investment aimed at elevating Cheadle Glass to a national presence. “We manufacture a wide range of products including glass balustrades, shower screens, mirrors, office partitions and glass splashbacks, among many others. These are available on both a supply only and a supply-and-install basis. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service and are well known for the consistently high quality of our finished products,” he explains.

Right decision, right time

It is essential to have the right infrastructure in place to support the continued expansion of Cheadle Glass, Cullen adds. “The two new cranes play a vital role in our operation, significantly enhancing our ability to manufacture and handle larger glass panels, which are becoming increasingly popular within the market.” Why was it time to upgrade the facility? “In line with the company’s continued growth, it is consistently investing in new machinery and equipment. The installation of the new cranes is a key part of this investment, enabling us to move and position new machinery efficiently while helping to shape the future development of both the premises and the business as a whole,” Cullen continues.

“The project was faultless from start to finish and delivered to an exceptionally high standard. Chesterfield Cranes undertook the work on a short lead time to ensure everything was in place for the New Year, and they achieved excellent results within a very tight timeframe. The fitting team – Bob Hayes, Jamas Garbles and Kelvin Doherty – did an outstanding job, working efficiently and collaboratively to complete the installation to a very high standard,” says Cullen.

Taking pride in a job well done

This is a project I am particularly proud of, adds Chris Mee, UK sales manager at Chesterfield Crane Company.

“We received the order for the cranes in early November, with manufacturing, installation, and commissioning all completed by mid-December – a real testament to the commitment and capability of our factory and installation teams.”

The installation was carried out on a weekend, outside of Cheadle Glass’s production hours, and presented a few challenges. The removal of the existing crane proved particularly tight, with only millimetres to spare on either side of the doorway, but Chesterfield’s team rose to the challenge and delivered exactly as expected.

“I absolutely love the colour choice, and the addition of the Cheadle Glass logo on the girder adds a fantastic personal touch that really stands out to site visitors. It was an absolute pleasure working with Cheadle Glass from start to finish, and we look forward to building on this relationship in the future,” adds Mee.
