Chinese crane manufacturer Yuantai Crane has delivered a 10-ton QDX double girder overhead crane to a steel mill in Chattogram, Bangladesh.

The new crane addresses the Bangladeshi mill’s challenges in handling heavy steel coils and billets, improving efficiency and safety in their operations.

Yuantai’s advanced crane system has optimised material handling processes at the facility.

The steel mill, which processes scrap metal and imported billets into rebars, angles, and channels, sought to upgrade its material handling infrastructure to meet local demand.

The 10-ton Double Girder QDX crane, designed for heavy-duty and high-cycle environments, was selected for its ability to manage the mill’s requirements.

The crane’s dual-girder construction reduces beam deflection under full 10-ton loads and allows for higher lift heights.

Its high-performance hoist mechanism, featuring a geared motor and electromagnetic drum brake, ensures smooth operation.

The crane also includes a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) to control motors, reducing energy consumption and stress on the power grid.

Integrated safety systems such as load sensors, infrared collision sensors, and emergency-stop buttons, prioritise crane safety.

An optional climate-controlled operator cabin and a fail-safe radio remote control will enhance operational efficiency and communication.

The crane also features robust end trucks and wheels, along with a modular bridge structure, to ensure long-term durability and ease of maintenance.

Yuantai customised the crane to fit the mill’s layout, with a 14m span and a 10m hook lift height, meeting the needs for transferring billets across the facility.

Rated for M6 service per FEM standards, the crane supports frequent operation cycles without overheating and comes with corrosion protection and noise reduction features.

Before adopting the QDX crane, the mill faced several challenges, including limited load capacity, frequent equipment failures, and safety incidents.

The previous cranes required tandem lifts for heavier loads, increasing the risk of accidents.

Maintenance costs were high due to frequent repairs, and the lack of integrated condition monitoring hindered predictive maintenance.

Since the deployment of the QDX crane, operational outcomes have improved significantly.

In the first quarter of 2025, the mill’s net output increased by 6% due to the crane’s ability to handle 10-ton loads in single lifts.

The enhanced safety record, with no incidents related to overhead lifting, has also contributed to a more secure working environment.

Recently, Yuantai delivered three 10-ton overhead cranes to a client operating a precast concrete plant near Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The plant produces beams, wall panels, and modular segments for residential and infrastructure projects, and needed a reliable solution to lift heavy concrete elements.
