Industrial equipment manufacturer LeTourneau Technologies has contracted crane and monorail system manufacturer Virginia Crane to design, build and install two 50USt overhead cranes, customised for plate handling.

Destined for LeTourneau Technologies’ mill and steel products headquarters in Longview, Texas, the cranes will service a cycle cooling bed in a bid to improve efficiency at the mill.

LeTourneau Technologies’ Longview mill fabricates high quality alloys and carbon steel plate, often with strictly specified chemical properties.

Owing to the constricted environment inside the mill at Longview, the design brief for the cranes required a span of 108ft designed for low headroom with less than 6ft of overall clearance.

Virginia Cranes’ resultant compact design for each cab-controlled overhead crane features two 20USt magnets, a 50USt auxiliary hoist on a rotating deck, a rotating spreader and custom hoists/trolleys operating between the inside webs of the girders.

A spokesman for the client explained the selection of Virginia Crane, a division of Foley Material Handling Company, attributing it to their: “consistency in service, quick turnaround on urgent orders, and their excellent sales and engineering teams”.
