The nominal diameter of the chain is 9/32 inches and is utilized on 1/2 US ton and 1 US ton Budgit chainfalls, and on 1 US ton, 1 1/2 US ton, and 2 US ton Tugit lever hoists, according to the Navy, which reported the failure in a recent issue of its Crane Corner bulletin.
“A welded alloy steel load chain link on a one-ton Budgit chainfall failed,” it said. “Preliminary investigation shows that the chain link lacked adequate fusion in the weld.”
A Columbus McKinnon spokesperson said that although its factory has been in direct contact with the US Navy about the matter, the company does not comment on issues involving customers.
