STS Bespoke Handling Equipment has developed a remote drum tipping solution for a nuclear site, enhancing safety and efficiency in waste handling operations.
The company was tasked with creating a system capable of lifting and tipping 205-litre steel drums into large waste containers using overhead cranes.
The primary challenge was managing the drums at significant heights, where manual rotation posed safety risks. The solution required a high lift capability and remote operation to protect operators from potentially hazardous materials.
The design team at STS responded by creating a battery-operated drum tipper attachment. This system includes a wireless, battery-powered remote control, akin to a crane pendant controller, allowing operators to manage the drum tipping process from a safe distance.
An electric motor drives the rotation, replacing the traditional worm-wheel gearbox and manual handle, which are impractical at height. The drum tipper securely attaches to the steel drums at ground level, ensuring safe handling before the crane lifts the drum.
The solution offers several advantages. Remote control reduces operator exposure to hazardous materials during the tipping process.
The battery-operated system allows for precise control over the tipping angle, ensuring accurate emptying of drums even at considerable heights.
Additionally, the attachment’s compatibility with various overhead crane systems provides flexibility to the customer’s existing setup.
