New research by Speedy Hire shows, it claims, that, on average, serious accidents caused by slips and trips increase by 11% after the clocks go back, with reduced light thought to be a significant factor.

The findings, based on data over the last four years supplied by the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), focus on cases that resulted in serious injury or over three days absence from work.

The figures make worrying reading for the construction industry as, according to the HSE, these accidents represent a cost of over £512million (over Euros 764m) each year.

Mark Turnbull, group health and safety manager at Speedy Hire said: “We’re encouraging construction workers and their employers to use the clock change as a wake-up call for site safety. Winter brings with it a number of risks and, as our research shows, an increased chance of incurring serious injury.”

He added: “Simple steps such as ensuring there is adequate lighting at all times and that walkways are clear of equipment and debris can reduce risks that seem to go hand-in-hand with winter working.”
