SCA Logistics has announced the acquisition of a new Mantsinen 200 knuckle boom crane for its terminal in Sundsvall, aimed at improving operational efficiency and service delivery. This investment is expected to enhance both capacity and flexibility at the terminal, allowing for more effective handling of cargo.

Sundsvall Terminal head of operations Tommy Berglund said: “We already have a crane of the same model, and now that we have two, we can load larger ships more efficiently.

“The time ships spend at the quay for loading or unloading will be significantly shorter when we can use two large cranes simultaneously. We also have the opportunity to receive two larger ships at the same time and use one crane for each. Previously, the second ship had to wait for the first to be serviced.”

The introduction of the new crane is designed to bolster safety measures and improve the working environment for operators. It features an advanced safety system that minimises the risk of collisions between tools and the operator’s cabin. Additionally, the crane is equipped with a load warning system, which aids operators in managing heavy loads safely and efficiently. Operators will also benefit from a computer interface in the cabin that allows for easy adjustments of settings for various tools.

Another significant benefit of this investment is the streamlined maintenance planning for the crane fleet. The Mantsinen 200 is capable of lifting six units of pulp bales, totalling 12 tonnes, in a single operation, while the crane itself weighs approximately four tonnes.

This latest investment is part of SCA’s broader strategy to enhance its Sundsvall terminal, which has seen nearly SEK460m ($47.4m) invested over recent years. This funding has also facilitated the development of a new container port and expanded cargo handling areas, further positioning the terminal for improved service capabilities.
