Konecranes has launched its new E-Hybrid Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) crane and electric empty container handler at the TOC Europe exhibition in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The E-Hybrid RTG crane introduces an advanced hybrid power approach, transitioning from traditional diesel-battery to electric-battery operation.

The hybrid power option is helpful for terminals that cannot yet eliminate diesel power due to the need for backup during power outages that can cause emergency stops.

Konecranes’ E-Hybrid RTG batteries can be charged using a cable reel or busbar system during regular operations.

It requires only 60kW of electrical power for charging, which is significantly lower than the up to 400kW needed for RTGs powered directly by cable reel or busbar systems.

The difference can contribute to significant capital expenditure savings when constructing or modifying container yard infrastructure.

Konecranes’ RTG battery technology, already implemented in over 200 hybrid RTGs worldwide, supports the system.

Konecranes port solutions marketing and customer experience director Thomas Gylling said: “Blackouts are a clear operational risk for a number of our terminal customers, so the Konecranes E-Hybrid RTG, with a combination of onboard batteries and busbar or cable reel electricity supply, solves that problem.

“But the E-Hybrid RTG is a game-changer for all customers on the road to fully electric container handling and lower emissions.

“The electric empty container handler is now available in Europe and North America. It has been well-received in the rest of the world, offering customers the compact efficiency they expect in a powerful and durable electric lift truck.”

The development supports the company’s goals of providing fully electric versions of its entire port equipment range by 2026, aligning with global sustainability goals.

A Brazilian container terminal has already placed an order for the E-Hybrid RTGs, and the product is now available globally.

In addition, Konecranes is introducing its electric empty container handler, with a capacity of nine to ten tonnes, in Europe and North America.

It follows the successful launches in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and Latin America.

The product launches are part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, which aims to enhance the environmental benefits while reducing customers’ carbon footprints.
