Konecranes has secured an order from Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI) in Chile for the largest mobile harbour crane in its portfolio, Gottwald ESP.10.

The crane is set to enhance container operations for super-post Panamax vessels, which are among the largest container ships worldwide.

Super-post Panamax vessels require cranes with extended height and reach capabilities to manage container stacks up to nine levels high and 22 wide.

ITI, part of maritime-logistics company SAAM Terminals, has selected the customised Konecranes Gottwald ESP.10 Mobile Harbour Crane to address these specific needs.

The crane is currently being shipped from Europe and is scheduled for delivery in April 2025.

Iquique Terminal Internacional General Manager Rodrigo Pommiez Aravena said: “ITI plays a critical role in connecting Chile with the world. This Generation 6 Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbour crane will be an excellent addition to our existing Konecranes fleet.

“We are very happy with the technology and look forward to boosting our operational capabilities so we can effectively serve super-post Panamax vessels.”

Konecranes Gottwald ESP.10 mobile harbour crane features a large working radius, enabling it to handle fully laden containers in the 22nd row.

It features a special 10-metre tower extension that raises the boom pivot point to reach container stacks.

The tower cab, situated at a height of 43 metres, offers operators an unobstructed view, enhancing precision and safety.

ITI has chosen an elevator solution to access the tower cab that can house three people.

The Generation 6 crane will be equipped with two telescopic twin-lift spreaders and the ability to control rotating spreaders, alongside motor grabs for bulk handling.

Konecranes TRUCONNECT Expert Module offered operational data insights, which can be visualised on the YourKonecranes web portal.

ITI can monitor crane performance and plan maintenance activities effectively.

Konecranes regional sales manager Alfredo Canibano Ramos said: “ITI saw our ESP.10 cranes in action at Super Terminais in Manaus, Brazil.

“They were very impressed with the performance and subsequently placed this order.

“It’s rewarding and encouraging for us to enlarge our footprint in Chile with our largest container-handling crane which will be at the same time also the largest mobile harbor crane in Chile.”

Recently, Konecranes announced it is supplying 14 cranes to Japanese machine tool builder Makino for its new manufacturing facility in Hung Yen province, near Hanoi, Vietnam.

The order comprises single and double girder cranes, wall console cranes, a wall-mounted slewing jib crane, and a KBK workstation suspension crane.
