Konecranes has secured a contract to deliver 39 industrial cranes to Hitachi Energy’s new transformer manufacturing facility in Mustasaari, Finland.

The cranes, with lifting capacities ranging from a few tons to several hundred tons, will support the demanding requirements of heavy transformer production.

The order, which includes SMARTON, S-series, and CXT overhead cranes, was confirmed in April 2025, with delivery expected by the end of 2026.

Hitachi Energy, a transformer manufacturer with a large installed base and portfolio range, is establishing a new production and technology centre in the Vaasa region.

The new facility, dubbed Hitachi Energy Park, will feature an advanced transformer factory for production and testing operations.

It also has office spaces for professionals in electrification, automation, and software development.

The facility aims to double Hitachi Energy’s transformer production and testing capacity in Finland, addressing the increasing demand for transformers worldwide.

Hitachi Energy Finland Managing Director Matti Vaattovaara said: “We need a partner who can deliver custom cranes that align with our production needs and time-critical investment schedule. We aim to double our transformer production capacity with a wider portfolio.

“Transformers are mission-critical technologies advancing societies toward a carbon-neutral energy future, supporting our customers in the clean energy transition and the rapid pace of electrification.

“As an integral part of our investment, these cranes must offer top-notch heavy-lifting capabilities, safety, and reliability.”

Konecranes will provide four SMARTON cranes, each with a main hoist capable of lifting several hundred tons and an auxiliary hoist with a capacity of 10 to 20 tons.

The SMARTON cranes provide intelligent lifting capabilities for the precise handling of large transformer components.

The remaining equipment comprises a combination of double-girder cranes, single-girder cranes, wall console cranes, and synchronised lifting and shared rail configurations.

The order also includes a spare parts package for critical components, power supply lines, operator training, and statutory annual inspections.

Konecranes Finland industrial cranes sales director Isto Heino said: “These cranes are tailored to the specific demands of transformer manufacturing, featuring motorised hook blocks for precise control and safety, and Konecranes S-series hoists with synthetic ropes to support a cleaner production environment.

“They were carefully integrated in collaboration with Hitachi Energy to enhance efficiency and streamline production.”
