CoreRFID, a technology company based in Liverpool, is developing a virtual reality (VR) interface using Apple Vision Pro headsets to allow engineers real-time access to compliance data on industrial sites.

The project aims to solve the problem of engineers in construction, lifting equipment and energy sectors who cannot quickly access technical information on site. This is particularly acute when conditions make the use of smartphones and tablets impractical.

CoreRFID’s CheckedOK software currently claims to support safety inspections for more than 24,000 engineers worldwide and manages compliance for over 500,000 sites.

Its research will consider whether VR headsets can provide engineers with access to technical drawings, inspection histories, maintenance records, and photographic evidence, all while maintaining hands-free operation.

The system is intended to integrate with CheckedOK, providing information needed during live operations.

CoreRFID’s approach differs from most existing VR safety solutions, which are generally used for training or hazard awareness.

The new research will concentrate on live field operations, initially recreating common inspection scenarios to test the feasibility of VR headsets in practical environments.

The company intends to explore compatibility with additional platforms, including Meta Quest and Microsoft HoloLens, following initial trials with Apple Vision Pro.

CoreRFID managing director and co-founder Munzi Ali said: “We’ve seen countless situations where engineers have the right information in their system, but accessing it effectively on-site remains problematic.

“VR offers the potential to create unlimited screen size within a spatial environment that makes sense to engineers working in three-dimensional spaces.”

Founded in 2007, CoreRFID delivers compliance software that accommodates regulations in the UK, Ireland, Australia, Brazil, India, and other countries.

The VR research project remains at the experimental stage with no confirmed timeline for commercial rollout.
