Baldor Electric is an industrial motor manufacturer producing highly efficient industrial electric motors under the NEMA motors brand.

The acquisition positions ABB to profit from new US regulations coming into effect. The ACEEE State Energy Efficiency Scorecard will set statewide targets and encourage industrial manufacturers to invest in sustainable power use.

The regulations will cause sales of highly efficient industrial electric motors to grow this year by 10–15%, ABB says.

ABB anticipates that similar regulations will become law in Canada, Mexico and in the European Union.

Baldor's 6,800 employees have increased ABB's by over a third, to somewhere in the region of 17,000.

Baldor's CEO Ron Tucker and former CEO John McFarland will continue working for the Baldor brand, but with the addition of ABB's North American motor and generator business.
