Now in its fifth year, LiftEx 2009 takes place at Chester Racecourse, UK, on 20 November.

This year, LEEA has increased the number of stands to 53. Here, we report on a selection of exhibitors.

Carl Stahl Evita, stand 19

Rotherham-based Carl Stahl Evita provides lifting related training globally and throughout the UK. From wire rope and lifting gear inspection to lifting and slinging, its courses are essential for companies seeking to train their employees to work competently and safely.

Training manager Geoff Burkill adds: “In order to build on our success we have decided to develop our partnership with the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association which, following consultation with the lifting industry, has introduced an accreditation scheme designed to maintain high levels of quality in the field of lifting training.”

- management of lifting and slinging;

Brindley Chains, stands 4 and 5

This year, Brindley Chains celebrates 25 years since incorporation in 1984 as the sole distributor in the UK for Pewag, the Austrian chainmaker.

Pewag has continued to expand its range of Winner grade 10 chain slings and now offers Grade 12 chains and fittings along with a new range of lifting points and lashing systems.

Pewag Grade 50 stainless steel chains and fittings are in high demand by water companies throughout the UK and Ireland, which Brindley services through a network of distributors.

Brindley Chains has been a LEEA member since 1986.

Arbil Ltd, stand 27

Arbil Ltd, a member of the Bills group, is one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of lifting, winching and jacking equipment in the UK. It is now a principal supplier to diverse markets such as construction, rail, defence, towing and recovery in addition to many OEMs.

Lift Turn Move, stand 18

Lift Turn Move Ltd recently installed state of the art rigging equipment at Echo Arena Liverpool, part of Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool.

Miller Weblift, stands 20 and 21

Miller Weblift is a subsidiary of the Unitex Group of companies, a multi-faceted international manufacturing company established to provide “the highest quality, complete and practical lifting and load restraint solutions to the industry,” it says. “We are manufacturers of high quality polyester flat and round lifting slings and polyester load securing systems.” Its brand names include Techlon and UltraLift.

Its presentation at LiftEx 2009, will detail the new lifting medium UltraLift and explain how Dyneema, the world’s strongest fibre, is the way forward in heavy lift operations.

Modulift, stand 13

Modulift is a design and engineering company specialising in the design and manufacture of spreader systems and bespoke lifting solutions.

Its range comprises 16 systems, which provide lifting capacity for weights between 2-5,000t and lengths from 200mm-53m. “All our products are optimised for weight at every size and are fully tested and certified,” it says.

The system is used for the smallest maintenance work to the largest lifting jobs in many industry sectors. Modulift currently has sales and rental customers in the construction, maritime, offshore, oil and gas, industrial and aerospace industries. All utilise the modular system to enable the lifting of various loads, without the need to buy or rent new spreader systems for every different job.

Niko Ltd, stand 38

The UK subsidiary of HELM Hellas SA, a leading European manufacturer, Niko specialises in the supply of light overhead cranes and lifting equipment to the trade and end-user markets. This includes the crane structures, festoon cable systems and overhead conveyor systems for applications ranging from paint spraying and powder coating, down to small manufacturing.

Based in the Midlands, Niko has easy access across the UK. Its engineers have more than 20 years experience in material handling. It offers free advice on all types of lifting, moving, and manipulation applications up to 2,000kg.

Red Rooster, stands 42 and 43

Red Rooster has over 20 years experience in providing and maintaining high quality lifting, winching and load measuring equipment throughout the world.

In addition to its range of air hoists, electric chain hoists, winches, snatch blocks and load measuring equipment, Red Rooster Industrial UK Limited will also be introducing its new 400t capacity horizontal test bed located within its Aberdeenshire premises.

The new test machine offers proof testing and calibration up to 400t and break testing up to 200t capacity.

The 400t horizontal test bed enhances Red Rooster’s existing test and calibration facility which includes its vertical gantry test machine offering dynamic load testing of winches up to 20t and hoists and trolleys up to 30t.

Cosalt, stand 11

Cosalt supplies, inspects, tests and maintains marine safety equipment, lifting gear, rope, rigging and height safety products. It is one of the UK's leading providers of protective clothing and equipment to the emergency services, military, transport and construction industries.

Cosalt has a European-wide business network that spans 25 separate locations; seventeen of these bases are fully approved liferaft and lifejacket service stations.

Water Weights, stand 41

Water Weights provides specialist proof load testing equipment for load bearing structures and lifting equipment. Water bags are extensively used in the industrial, marine, construction and power generation sectors. “They are easy to handle and fill, economical and very safe. Water Weights bags can be used to test cranes, davits, derricks, lifeboats, pad eyes, ramps, lifts, link spans, and inaccessible lifting points deemed impossible by any other method,” it says.

The company operates from three depots in the UK. The Water Weights international group of companies and approved operators offer a worldwide network of services covering 27 countries on five continents. Water Weights Inc. operates six depots across the USA.

New-Tonne Lifting Services, stands 28 and 32

New-Tonne Lifting Services can offer both trade and end users the full package from design, manufacture, installation, repair, test, service, inspection and supply of all types of lifting equipment.

It says: “We are the UK sole agent for RWM hoists with a full range from 125-5,000kg with various suspensions, such as eye, top hook, push travel, hand geared travel and powered units. The hoists and powered trolleys can come with either single or dual speeds and are fitted with electronic limit switches for all motions. RWM can now also offer a full range of hoists for the theatre and entertainment industries.”

Reid Lifting, stand 33

Reid Lifting manufactures innovative, lightweight, portable, safe lifting systems for a wide range of lifting applications to 5,000kg and beyond.

It says its “flexible range of products reduce injury in the workplace and make work practices safer and more efficient by using lightweight aluminium structures which are easily transported and deployed.

“These innovative ideas make Reid’s lifting solutions some of the most affordable and reliable in the industry,” it says.

The firm has experience in providing solutions to an extensive range of sectors, from waste water treatment and oil rigs to museums and hospitals.

Reid provides solutions directly and through a rapidly growing network of partners, distributors and resellers with presences across Europe, the Middle East, America and Canada.

Crosby Europe (UK), stand 51

Crosby will launch its new range of CrosbyIP lifting clamps fitted with magnets and the new Crosby Clamp-Co pipe grabs, barrier and curb grabs. Coupled with the existing range of CrosbyIP lifting clamps, this allows distributors to offer a complete solution in a variety of applications such as:

- steel fabrication;

- pipe laying;

- road construction;

- manufacturing;

- steel erection.

All load bearing components are manufactured from high strength, abrasion resistant or fatigue proof alloy steels using dedicated tooling. The new enhancements of the magnets ensure the clamp remains in the proper position on the plate, “a unique characteristic,” it says.

Straightpoint (UK) Ltd, stand 44

Straightpoint designs and manufactures a huge range of force measurement, load monitoring and suspended weighing load cells up to 1,000t capacity.

For over 30 years, Straightpoint has manufactured load links, crane scales, load cells and radiolinks.

SpanSet Limited, stand 25

Part of the SpanSet International Group, which has 12 operating companies sited across the world, SpanSet Limited has been in operation in the UK for 40 years. “The company’s vast experience and resources in webbing-based products has provided the perfect background for the development of many innovative and patented products,” it says.

These developments have included the patented roundsling in the 1970s to the new generation PowerStar websling, the novel joker hook and also the high capacity 100t MagnumPlus roundslings. All are aimed at improving safety.

SpanSet provides training courses to support its extensive product range, including:

- safe slinging and lifting appreciation;

- practical slinging beneath the hook;

- rigging and lifting for workers at height;

- lifting equipment - practical inspections and record keeping.

Within the lifting equipment and material handling industries, “the equipment inspection, testing and certification process in many instances is paper-based, repetitive, time consuming and costly,” according to Sitedesk.

Its system, featuring a combination of web and wireless technology, “allows businesses to implement a more streamlined, cost effective and automated inspection process,” it adds.
