Ederer’s latest nuclear power plant crane is a 130 US ton (118t) capacity “single-failure-proof” gantry model for a plant in Illinois, USA.
It is to be used for decommissioning work at Commonwealth Edison’s Dresden No.1 plant where casks containing spent nuclear fuel are to be moved to a storage facility.
Ederer’s director of sales engineering, James Nelson, said that the existing crane had insufficient lifting capacity and failed to meet current regulations for the application.
The new crane features Ederer’s X-SAM (extra safety and monitoring) which it claims is the only single-failure-proof design that is “generically accepted” by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commision. A new rail and support beam system is included in the contract and the complete system is designed to withstand a worst-case earthquake while operating.
