Zollern claims that its new electric compact winch is “the first winch ever to have the electric motor and gearbox integrated within the drum which means that an electric winch can be as compact as a hydraulic one”.

Launched earlier this year in Germany, typical applications have been hoisting and luffing on shipboard cranes and harbour cranes.

At the heart of the new winch is a patented fluid cooled motor developed in conjuction with motor supplier VEM which is part of the Zollern group.

Cooling fluid passes through the double walled motor and heat is carried off to the air via an oil/air heat exchanger which maintains the correct motor temperature for optimum efficiency.

Available with a rope pull of up to 390kN and 390kW capacity, the modular design includes standardised planetary gears and a safety brake.
