London Underground, which operates the Tube railway in the UK capital, has adopted a lightweight gantry system to help with maintenance of elevators and escalators throughout the network.

The maintenance crew is often working in confined spaces and often has to transport materials handling equipment down elevator shafts before setting up. Reid Lifting, based in South Wales, supplied two custom-built Porta-Gantries for London Underground's lifts and escalators department. Made from high tensile alloy, the Porta-Gantry unit can be transported, assembled and later dismantled by just two people within a single day, according to Reid.
