ALE has moved the first of two gantry cranes as part of a project in the renewables sector.

The company moved the 540t crane at the project site using 48 axle lines of SPMTS (self-propelled modular trailers) and 36 axle lines of spacers.

The two sides of the gantry had to be braced together, as the gantry was only stable on its own rails; this was completed by connecting the SPMTs, using two 35m-long, 1m-diameter tubular braces. The braces kept the SMPTs in position and prevented the gantry leg from splaying.

ALE arranged the 48 axle lines of SPMTs in a configuration of 4 by 2 file 12, and positioned 12m-long spreader beams under the gantry’s bogies. This enabled the company to pick up the crane using the SPMTs’ integral hydraulic suspension.

Once picked up, the gantry crane was transported 100m to a different location at the project site, to be offloaded by a crane.
