The two double girder travelling cranes have spans of 30.8m and 31.5m, with both rated at 7t + 7t SWL. They are both equipped with two Demag DR-PRO wire rope hoists, mounted with magnets. The magnets are used in the lifting process to eliminate slinging of loads and remove the need for operators in the lifting area.

Travel speeds range between 8-80m/min, with cross travel speeds of 5-25m/min and hoisting speeds of 1-16m/min. Drive motors feature AC frequency inverters for variable speed, and crane operation is controlled by a HBC radio control.

Rainham Steel’s 50-acre Scunthorpe stockyard holds 55,000t of steel at any one time, and to meet sustained expansion the company has developed a 75,000 sq ft warehouse facility for the processing and storage of steel beams.

The installation of the two cranes is part of phase one of the development, with a further two crane systems scheduled for installation in the first quarter of 2010.
