Siemens has finally set out in detail the structure of its new subsidiary, Siemens Dematic AG. This company is the parent company of EOT crane and hoist manufacturer Demag Cranes & Components.
Siemens Dematic, based in Nuremberg, Germany, was born out of Siemens’ acquisition of Mannesmann Atecs and the subsequent merger of Siemens Production & Logistics Systems (PL) with Mannesmann Dematic.
The new company’s activities span logistics automation, mail sorting systems and equipment, automation technology for electronics manufacturing as well as the crane business. It has approximately 21,000 employees and sales of E5bn.
Dietmar Straub, former chairman of the executive committee of Mannesmann Dematic, is chairman of the executive committee of Siemens Dematic.
The company is divided into three business units and two independent entities. These are:
• Material Handling Automation, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA and Offenbach, Germany, brings together the general logistics automation solutions of Siemens PL and Mannesmann Dematic. Materials Handling Automation, which includes the former Rapistan Systems, is claimed to be the market leader in logistics automation in the USA.
• Postal Automation consists of the former Siemens ElectroCom companies in the USA and Germany.
• Electronics Assembly Systems, based in Munich, Germany, supplies systems and automation solutions, particularly for electronics production.
The independent companies are the two Demag-branded crane manufacturers, namely:
• Demag Cranes & Components GmbH, based in Wetter, Germany, is the EOT crane and hoist business.
• Demag Mobile Cranes GmbH in Zweibrücken, Germany, produces telescopic and lattice boom mobile, crawler and harbour cranes.
