Accredited and endorsed by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), those who successfully complete the so-called ‘Morris academy’ training scheme will receive the Barleythorpe Platinum Award in management development. Held at the Barleythorpe Training and Conference Centre in Oakham, Rutland, an initial intake of eight Morris managers are currently in the process of participating in the three, two-day modular residential course.
Morris human resources manager Karen Winfield said: “The academy course serves to focus on those managers who operate on a daily basis in a customer service focused environment.”
She added that, in essence, it has been structured to ensure that they are equipped with the skills, confidence and leadership qualities required to realise their true potential by managing more effectively and efficiently.
Winfield said: “Not only does the scheme represent a significant financial investment, it is the culmination of a great deal of time and effort that both Morris and Barleythorpe have put into its development. What’s more, we are optimistic that after evaluating the success of the course this time round, other members of our maintenance services team will be given the opportunity to partake in future,” she added.
Prior to commencing the course, each participant is required to complete a comprehensive psychometric test, which is seen as an important part of employee development and coaching, with self-awareness, Morris said, being a vital step on the challenging journey of personal development.
This is followed by three, two-day modules that cover the specific areas of managing, motivating and communication. In addition to attending and actively participating in all three modules, course students have to complete two assignments within 16 weeks of the course, submit a written report on the content and outcomes of their chosen assignments, and prepare and deliver a formal 30-minute presentation on this and the programme to a panel of external advisers.
