The company explained that the new concept is designed to apply an independent brake unit to a standard B5 or different flanged explosion proof motor or to a transmission unit. Coel told HOIST: “The VIS brake is certified as an independent component. It means that there are no coupling procedures in order to define the certification.”
The VIS brake is available in B5 flange face to face version (IEC 63 to 200) or, on request, can be made with a NEMA or special flange coupling. “The mounting is very fast,” Coel insisted.
It is also possible to mount the VIS brake on the back side of an EX motor. Coel said this is done by making the motor construction with double flange and shaft execution and using the shaft of the VIS brake for the fan application and the flange for fixing the fan cover.
The braking torque values are between 5 to 460 Nm (depending on frames) and the electromagnets fitted inside the VIS brake can be AC three phase or DC.
Coel said that explosion proof brake motors already on the market are not only expensive but few companies are able to supply them and the delivery time is often too long. It added that extensive tests confirmed this.
Coel explained that a further restriction of existing EX brake motors was that they required the brake gap to be adjusted. As this should be done only by a specialised person, the brake motors have to be disassembled every time. Thus, it said, resulting in expense and downtime.
