A contract for four offshore cranes to be delivered to the Cygnus gas field in the southern basin of the North Sea has recently been awarded.

Liebherr's maritime division, headed up by Liebherr-Werk Nenzing in Austria, will supply four RL 2650-25 D EX Litronic offshore cranes to the gas field's operator GDF Suez Exploration and Production UK. The four offshore cranes will be built at Liebherr's Sunderland, UK manufacturing facility.

The Cygnus gas field is the largest to be discovered in the last 25 years in the North Sea's southern basin. Production is expected to start in late 2015.

The field is expected to meet demand for nearly 1.5 million homes at peak production, accounting for around 5% of the UK's gas production.
