KCI Konecranes and its subsidiary companies SWF Krantechnik in Germany and Verlinde in France have brought to market explosion proof versions of their Q series patform wire rope hoists, variously branded as Konecranes CXT, SWF Nova, and Verlinde VT.

The explosion proof versions will be available from SWF up to a standard safe working load of 20 t, with higher capacities available upon request. Konecranes' CXT Ex is promoted with SWL of up to 80t, dual operating speeds, hoisting motor with continuous temperature control and thermal protection, galvanized ropes, epoxy resin paint and electro-mechanical overload protection.

SWF's promotional material emphasises bronze trolley wheels and a bronze coated load hook as optional extras to prevent sparking. SWF is also developing frequency inverter technology for its explosion proof range.

The explosion proof protection class EEx de IIB T4 has been chosen as standard to cover some 95% of all industrial explosion proof applications. However as an option the protection class EEx de IIC T4 is also available. Both versions have been designed for Zone 1 as well as Zone 2.

Hoist and travel motors have been re-designed to suit the protection class EEx de IIC in Zone 1. These components have also been approved to meet the requirements for dust protection Zone 21 and 22. All of the parts used in the construction of the explosion proof wire rope hoists correspond to the current ATEX 100a European regulations.
